He was a spokenman of Bo Ba’s Teaching Methodology
and a theorist of non-Soviet Union school of oil painting. For long years
he went in for the comparative research work between the traditional
Chinese and Western arts, and laid stress on the expression of cultural
consciousness in painting, with many works during his life. It may be
expressed Xu’s art thinking in his introduction to painting of Romania,
his researches on sketches and his comments on painters of non-Soviet
Union school. He also made many special researches on such painters as Bo
Ba, Ba Ba, Guan Liang, Ni Yide, Lin Dachuan and Hu Shanyu, with his deep
views for these painters. He treated men with honesty and respected the
old generation. He oftentimes organized exhibitions and discussions for
some old painters such as Hu Shanyu. He once taught at the oil painting
department and teachers department. He was good at theoretical
instruction. He was a teacher with good organization ability and a good
public figure.
His works of painting are brimming with interest and
charm and artistic conception, being meaningful in painting style and rich
in poetic flavour. He strived to infuse the theory of traditional Chinese
painting and calligraphy into his oil paintings, so as to make his works
have a distinct national flavour. Having been living in Suzhou and
Hangzhou for long years, he always took the regions of rivers and lakes in
the south of Yangtze River as his creative themes, thus making his
paintings full of poetic and artistic conception.
In his painting career, Xu was in pursuit of
distinctive features of implication and lyricism, and laid stress on
expression of artistic conception. In addition, he also applied the
painting techniques such as density, vergence, implication, emptiness and
solidness, along with foreign art forms and style of freehand brushwork in
traditional Chinese painting, to express his own emotion and aspiration. |
