Soviet Union was made by the Ministry of Education. Recommended by his school, Quan took the examination and was enrolled. He was first sent to study Russian for one year in the Foreign Language Institute in Beijing. He was sent to study oil painting in the Lenin Institute of Fine Arts in Leningrad in the autumn of 1954. During his study there he studied extensively the cultural art of Russia, Soviet Union and Europe. He also visited museums and cultural relics at various cities and villages. All such activities exerted great influence to his painting career. After six years of studying abroad, he was back to China in the autumn of 1960. Again he returned to his Alma
Mater¢wZhejiang Institute of Fine Arts. Since then he has been teaching there as head of the Oil Painting Department, associate professor, professor, dean and head of the No. 3 Studio. He has trained many undergraduates, graduate students and young teachers. At the same time he has been persisting in art practice. During the sixties and seventies, he engaged in historical paintings. His main productions included "Rather Die than Surrender", "On the Jinggangshan Mount" and
"Yunshan Pass", etc. Between the late seventies and early eighties, he went to Xinjiang eight times, teaching and living with the local people. There he made a series of paintings depicting life and custom of the minorities such as "Tajik Girl", "Old Artisan",
"Uighur Builders", "Folk Music" and "Road to Altaic", etc.
His works of art often takes part in exhibitions held in China and abroad. He published "Selections of Quan Shanshi Oil Paintings", "Selections of Quan Shanshi Portraits", "Selections of Quan Shanshi Paintings on Life in
Xinjiang" and "Selections of Quan Shanshi Sketches", etc. His translation works included "Sketches of Edgar Degas", "Sketches of Selov and
Frubel", "Art of Schiller" and "Technique of Traditional Oil Painting", etc. His solo show was held under the auspices of the Oriental Arts Foundation in Hong Kong Hall in April 1995, with enthusiastic response. |
